Chain Grate vs. Reciprocating Grate: How to Choose the Right Boiler for Your Plant?

Time: 2026-03-26 Click: 165 seen

When selecting an industrial solid fuel boiler (such as a biomass or coal-fired boiler), the type of grate determines thermal efficiency, fuel adaptability, and long-term maintenance costs. As a professional boiler supplier, TGBOILER will explain the differences between chain grates and reciprocating grates.

Chain Grate vs. Reciprocating Grate (2).webp

1. Operating Principle/Movement Mechanism

Chain Grate: Similar to a conveyor belt. Fuel falls from the hopper and moves slowly backward with the chain, sequentially undergoing preheating, combustion, and burnout. The fuel layer remains relatively stationary, resulting in stable combustion but slightly reduced flexibility in adjustment.

Reciprocating Grate: The grate consists of alternating movable and fixed bars. A driving mechanism causes the fuel to move back and forth on the steps, breaking it up. This prevents coking and ensures that even low-quality fuel has sufficient contact with air for efficient combustion.

2.Key Differences Comparison Table

FeaturesChain Grate BoilerReciprocating Grate Boiler
Fuel VersatilityLimited. Best for uniform particles, non-clinkering coal, or high-quality biomass.Extremely Wide. Suitable for biomass, large particles, high-moisture, and even low-quality fuels prone to clinkering.
Combustion PerformanceRelatively stable, but provides less agitation within the fuel bed.Reciprocating motion breaks up clinkers, ensuring more thorough combustion and higher thermal efficiency.
Structure & CostRelatively simple and mature design. Low failure rate, easy to install and maintain.Complex mechanical structure with high heat-resistance requirements for grate bars; higher manufacturing and maintenance costs.

3. How to Choose the Right Grate?

If you prioritize simple operation and stable fuel quality, choose a chain grate;

If you prioritize high combustion efficiency and plan to use low-quality biomass or waste fuel, choose a reciprocating grate.

Overall, both chain grates and reciprocating grates have their own specific applications and respective advantages. The choice should be based on actual requirements.
